SPOTLIGHT ON ... DESIGNER
May 2008
Our featured designer for this month is Lea Avroch.
I started out designing jewelry about 9 years ago. I had just had cervical spine surgery and was virtually confined to the house for 6 months, unable to drive. One of my husband’s employees was gifted a necklace that she didn’t much care for. She knew that I had dabbled in jewelry making in the past and approached me to see if I could redesign the piece since she liked the elements, just not the finished product. I took the piece apart, added some beads from my own stock and made her a brand new necklace with a matching bracelet and earrings. She loved it and encouraged me to continue to make jewelry.
Since I was home and unable to do very much, I decided to take her advice. That distraction became my saving grace and something that I love to do to this day. I’ve since branched out into a bit of metal work and my 2 main loves, seedbeads and lampwork. I was always fascinated with glass blowing so when I saw a beginner lampwork class at a local art league I saw an opportunity to combine 2 things that I enjoy, glass and jewelry. That was a little over 2 years ago. In August 2007 I took an intro to boro class at Beadfest Philly and immediately fell in love. I love the ethereal quality of the colors you can get from boro. I enjoy working with both soft glass and boro as they each have certain qualities that the other doesn’t. My husband enjoys telling everyone that his wife makes glass beads with a “blow torch”.
