CHA: More than just a Craft Industry Trade Organization Written by: Lynda Musante
The Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) is the trade association formed by the 2004 merger of two trade associations. The merger between The Association of Crafts and Creative Industries (ACCI) and the Hobby Industries Association (HIA) resulted in a united industry with a single association with over 6,000 member companies. Through the merger, the craft industry now has one voice and single board of directors.
A key event sponsored by CHA is the Winter Trade Show which typically occurs at the end of January each year. This year, this show will be located in Anaheim, CA. It is at this show where the industry comes together to launch new products; educate store owners and instructors on these new products as well as meet to conduct the business of the industry. This show is the largest international trade event for the craft industry.
At this trade-only show, store owners and buyers from all over the world come to see the new products, trends and make purchases for what they will feature in their stores throughout the following year. CHA also sponsors a second show, the Summer Trade show which historically occurs each July in Rosemont, IL just outside of Chicago.
CHA also sponsors several studies: consumer usage and purchases; academic value of education in the schools, as well as the impact of Hispanic consumers on the craft industry. A top priority of the trade association is to build consumer awareness and sales of craft products. Another priority is the education of independent retail store owners as well as vendors. Classes in business management, supply chain, and workshops on specific topics are available at trade shows as well as other venues. According to the most recent study, sales within the craft industry exceed $30 billion. Additionally, CHA manages an online website just for teacher who are interested in using crafts in the classroom at www.teacherplace.org.
In July 2006, the Society of Craft Designers (SCD) dissolved their charter and joined CHA. This decision has united the members of the two largest groups of independent designers. During trade shows, CHA offers a section of the trade show floor, called the Inspiration and Design Faire for designers to display their work in booths for show attendees to review.
CHA also sponsors National Craft Month each March and Celebrate the Season in each September. These events are marked by special events in chain and independent stores to create excitement so consumers will visit the stores and try new products. Look for these events in your local stores or retail circulars.
