Relay For Life®, the American Cancer Society's signature event, is a fun-filled overnight experience designed to bring together those who have been touched by cancer. At Relay, people from within the community gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and to fight back against this disease. Relay participants help raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society in its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health issue.
Kim E. Ridge, a Soft Flex Company employee, participates each year. Her team name is HUGS (Help Us Give Support). HUGS set up a "Bead Out Cancer" booth where people can pick up beads to keep count of how many laps they have walked during the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life at Sonoma Valey High School in Sonoma on Saturday August 2, 2008.
Team HUGS raised over $1,200.00, during the Relay selling our "Bead Out Cancer" Necklaces. They were a big hit! We sold over 100 laces for people to keep track of their laps. This article came out in one of the local papers which releases on-line nightly.
As of the end of the relay on Sunday morning Sonoma raised over $232,000 and we still have 2 weeks to go before the final day for collecting!
Last year, Soft Flex donated a beginners beading kit for the Silent auction. That was also a big hit! Soft Flex Company invites everyone to join in that can’t be there by making an online contribution. Click to view the team page for HUGS
The Breast Cancer 3-day - Donate to the 3 Day
In November 2006, our very own Sara Hardin of "Ask Sara" helped her team raise more than $10,000 and then they each walked 60 inspirational miles over the course of 3 days in honor of breast cancer awareness and research. She is considering signing up again. If you would like to be put on her donor email list, please send her an email at Sara@SoftFlexCompany.com.
In November 2008, Sara Hardin will walk in the Breast Cancer 3-day again. This time she will be walking in San Diego, CA as a member of Team Beadalicious. Team members include her mom (Denise Nottingham), cousin (Virginia Barrera) and good friend (Lisa Kan). They are each working hard to meet the minimum donation requirements. Fortunately Sara has met the requirements and asks that you please donate to whichever team member needs donations the most. There is a minimum of $2,200 for each team member to raise before they are able to walk. Click here to donate!
Thousands of women and men will unite in cities across the country and walk 60 miles over the course of three days. It's a weekend of hope, as we honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research, and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it. Net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Days benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to fund breast cancer research and community outreach, as well as the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, to provide an endowment for breast cancer initiatives. Beads of Courage Program
Jean M. Baruch, RN, BSN, is the program director - Jean developed the program to offer support and encouagement to kids fighting cancer. The program provides the hospital with a kit containing stringing supplies and a neverending supply of colored wood and plastic beads. Each bead color represents a treatment. The program is designed to help kids relieve stress, see progress, and track their treatments with something pretty and tangible, and it helps them open up and talk about their treatment. During their treatments the kids can accumulate an awful lot of necklaces!

The Portable Playhouse
Early, in 2001, two sisters, Maryann Corey and Patty McGeary, founded The Portable Playhouse in Boston Massachusetts. The idea for the organization came during a lunch discussion over how to fulfill their dreams, and incorporate their passions, into a life long career. The Portable Playhouse was originally born as an idea to establish an after school art program, for all children, to be called The Playhouse. The sisters searched for a building to house their organization, but were unsuccessful. Still determined to realize their dream, the women set off on a different course. They declared that if the children could not come to the Playhouse, the Playhouse would come to them. Thus, The Portable Playhouse was created. Making the playhouse portable was just the beginning. They discovered that there was a principal need for creative outlets in hospitals. They contacted hospitals in Boston, and Massachusetts General Hospital was the first to open their doors to the therapeutic art beading program provided by The Portable Playhouse.
The Hope Bracelet Project
The HOPE Bracelet Project is collecting beads and jewelry making supplies, and then teaching students at the Medhane-Alem School in Yetebon, Ethiopia to create limited edition, beautiful bracelets. Our project will help “teach them to fish” by teaching them to create beads and bead jewelry, and will create an ongoing source of new skills, revenue and pride in their craft.
Beads of Hope
Beads of Hope, a non-profit organization, was founded in early 2002 by Marilyn Berg to teach the fundamentals of jewelry making to underprivileged people.
On Beads of Prayer
Bead (bede) means prayer! The purpose of On Beads of Prayer is to help people grow in their personal spiritual journeys, using the time-honored joy and mystery of praying with Protestant (Anglican) prayerbeads. On Beads of Prayer works with all denominations. Our ministry introduces the use of prayerbeads, offers beautiful, blessed, handmade beads for sale, and helps churches and groups to start their own similar programs. In addition to working with youth, prayer groups and seniors, there is a special and growing effort to support our troops in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and wounded soldiers in veterans’ hospitals, by sending prayerbeads to them. On Beads of Prayer donated 750 sets of prayerbeads this past fall. Although there is nothing magical about the beads, praying with them may result in miracles. Every set of prayerbeads is strung with Soft Flex Wire Medium for maximum strength and flexibility. We are pleased to be a Soft Flex Company supported charity.
